I just watched the film “Poetry” and found it exceptional, moving and very thought provoking.
I’m wondering if you have an insight into who Agnes is referred to in the the title of the poem “Agnes’ Song”.
If you just watched the film I hope you didn’t suffer as much melancholy as I did right afterwards. It’s been a while but I remember thinking that (this will be a spoiler for anyone who hasn’t seen the film), that the poem was for the girl who committed suicide. However, in a metaphorical way, the girl and the main character were the same person. They were both pretty powerless, and the people around them just used them up, yet you could see that despite that, the elderly lady managed to do a few things on her own terms. I don’t condone suicide — but maybe the film was trying to demonstrate how in the history of the world’s second class citizens the powerless have felt the need to grab what power they could.
